REVIEW: Kyau & Albert – 15 Years The Album

Artist: Kyau & Albert
Genre: Trance
Label: Euphonic
Release Date: March 30, 2012
Rating: 9.5 out of 10.0

Introduction:
Two German DJs Ralph Kyau and Steven Moebius Albert joined forces in 1996 after the release of their first single “Let Me In”, then known as Kyau vs. Albert. The following year, in 1997, their label Euphonic was created.

Euphonic signed various DJs such as Sonorous and Ronski Speed. Being recognized for their talent, in 2000 the DJ duo affirmed a long term contract with WEA while receiving much appreciated support from Paul van Dyk, KayCee, and Tiesto.

In 2006, both changed their working name to Kyau & Albert, and continued to produce tracks for EDM. 2012 signifies a great year, releasing an album full of their known tracks, including four unreleased remixes, and one previously unreleased track “This Love”.

Review:

If you're a fan of Kyau & Albert, then there is no doubt that you've heard most of the songs on this compilation. The 17-track album provides various remixes of tracks from their two studio albums Here We Are Now (2004) and Worldvibe (2006), as well as their released singles. Four previously unreleased remixes and one unreleased track titled “This Love” made their way onto this album. Starting off with the unreleased material, “Falling Anywhere (Sun Jellie Remix)” is the album opener, originally released in 2005; the newly rendered instrumental version is more of a soft electro style rather than trance. “This Love” is not yet released but a short preview has already been posted in January. It is more of a dance track, which includes guitar riffs and male vocals which take a while to get used to. Originally released in 2002, but recently remixed by Steve Brian is “Save Me”, a lightly progressive with electronic sounds track. An alternative mix of “Painkillers” has a beautiful orchestral beginning turning into cross between soft breakbeat and alternative drumbeats right after. The last unreleased remix is by Stoneface & Terminal entitled “Made of Sun”, which gets my vote as the best remix on this album. Definitely unleashing its progressive beat, during the chorus it becomes a borderline Dubstep track without the delayed bass.

Many DJs took part in remixing tracks for this album, artists such as Tritonal, Arty, Cosmic Gate, Mat Zo, Stoneface & Terminal, Ronski Speed, and Super8 & Tab showed their support. It also includes two 2011 reworks of “Always A Fool”, and “Kiksu”, the album also incorporates two tracks with Marc Marberg; “Neo Love”, and “Megashira”.

Among other great remixes belongs the Tritonal remix of “Once In A Lifetime”, which gives the typical Tritonal feel like their other tracks do. Followed by “Are You Fine?” a remix by the talented Arty that maintains its bounciness, and was originally released in 2006. The Ronski Speed remix of “Megashira” featuring Marc Marberg is definitely a progressive tune with tons of hard synths, until its beautiful breakdown strikes. “I Love You (Cosmic Gate Remix)” is full of airiness, uplifting beats, with male and female voices alternatively saying 'I love you', that makes it a beautifully arranged track. One of my favorite Kyau & Albert tracks is the last in line on this compilation, a Super8 & Tab remix of “Velvet Morning” with vocals by Damae. During its breakdown there is a beautiful echoed melody, afterwards the same sequence of sounds is portrayed by harsh synths. Including bouncy beats and uplifting vocals, it was originally released in 2003, and makes it a great way to close off the album.

A lot of great variety is offered with new, old, unreleased, and original remixes of Kyau & Albert productions. Many of the tunes are progressive trance with steady beats, which make it a wonderful continuous play. Unfortunately, the album stops short of tracks released before the year 2002, which in fact does not make it the last 15 years. It'd be great to see tracks such as “Let Me In”, “Rocket”, and “Outside” included into this compilation to fulfill their promise of tracks for the past 15 years. Otherwise, it is a brilliant album that will keep you on your feet dancing while listening. The album will be released on March 30th, 2012 and you can purchase the album on pre-sale here: http://shop.euphonic.de/

REVIEW: Ferry Corsten – WKND

Artist: Ferry Corsten

Genre: Trance

Label: Flashover Recordings

Release Date: February 24, 2012

Rating: 9.3 out of 10.0

Introduction:

A Dutch phenomenon Ferry Corsten celebrates his 20 years in the EDM scene by delivering his fourth studio album WKND on February 24th, 2012. The album incorporates important collaborations with artists such as Betsie Larkin, Armin van Buuren, Aruna, and JES who have already imprinted their importance of contribution in the Trance scene. Corsten's legacy began in 1991 by producing hardcore gabber and eventually expanding to clubhouse and trance music. In the 20 year’s worth, Corsten accomplished to create his own record label Flashover Recordings in 2005, and coin his concept name L.E.F. eventually releasing a second solo album under the same title. Corsten hosts his own one hour “Corsten's Countdown” music podcast since 2007 delivering the finest tunes on the market. He has also used more than a dozen aliases from which only one is still used – Gouryella, while abandoning the rest. Now it's time to turn the page and enjoy his latest release WKND.

Review:

WKND, Ferry's fourth studio album, begins with “A Day Without Rain” featuring vocals by Ellie Lawson. Her soothing voice, soft bass-line, and ambiance give it a chillout feel; it is definitely the tenderest track on the whole entire release. Released as the first single in 2011 is “Feel It”, which has a hardcore beat and a tingly cool down in the middle make it the ultimate dance floor killer.

“Ain't No Stoppin'” is the most recent and fourth single release (January 30th, 2012) featuring male vocals done by Ben Hauge. Perfectly filled with hardcore bass line and catchy synths, while running at only 3:20 minutes, the track is over before you know it.     “Don't Be Afraid” is an instrumental tune that is lacking a quicker build up throughout the beginning, it takes too long to start. However once it starts, it becomes very powerful filled with a weaker beat, but superb harsh leads. It has somewhat of a Euro feel, and very comparable to older Ferry tracks.

NYC based vocalist Betsie Larkin takes a part on a collaboration with Ferry Corsten “Not Coming Down” in which she proves that nothing will tear her down. Softer tune than the previous one for sure, including a beautiful piano melody accompanied by her sweet vocals. During the piano solo, it'll make you forget you're in fact listening to a trance song, until it'll blow up with a steady beat. “Brute” is a monstrous track coming from two legendary Trance gurus – Ferry Corsten and Armin van Buuren. “Brute” has already released as the third single in September 2011, it has became a favorite of many people including a massive buildup, hardcore beat, bouncy bass, and relaxing cool off while layered with catchy effects, this will get your blood pumping.

Introduced in September 2011, “Live Forever” is a collaboration with the multi-talented, EDM's fine Los Angeles based vocalist Aruna, who has stamped her importance within the Trance Family. Her divine vocals are luxuriously added to the progressive track, that has occasional synths popping out at different levels, while the main synths are creating the tune. The combination of lyrics, effects, vocals, and dreaminess make this a mesmerizing experience. It is my favorite track on of the album, as any Aruna collaboration is.

“Let You Go” featuring Sarah Bettens is more of a dance style track rather than trance. It has a very bouncy beat, sweet vocals, but lacks the trance-iness. It is something that would most likely be played on the radio. The most controversial track as well as the second single released in 2011 is “Check It Out”. It is debatable for Trance fans, as it may sound more mainstream. Personally, it does maintain its progressiveness, with great bassline. I feel it may be more appealing as an instrumental track.

“Love Will” featuring Duane Harden, has a great piano riff with an occasional part of a soft Drum'n'bass drum beat. It's not very progressive but it’s more danceable with soft synths accompanying the vocals.

Another favorite this album is “In Your Eyes” featuring JES. Her luscious vocals are included in this heart warming love tune. It maintains a soft progressive beat with a dreamy ambient background. It is a sweet track that awaits dedication to any significant other.  A refreshing tune “Walk On Air” featuring Pierre In The Air and Amba Shepherd, is a very bouncy and happy kind of a creation. The effects of synths and beats make it very colorful and juicy.

The newly announced instrumental “Take Me” was played on Corsten's Countdown 240 on February 1st. It’s filled with a deep bassline, driven by strong leads, but lacks variety throughout. Last but not least is “WKND” after which the album has been titled. It has a slower tempo than the previous energetic release. The iTunes version of WKND offers a bonus track titled “Sunday”, it will not be available on the physical copy of the release.

Ferry Corsten's album WKND offers an exceptional variety of vocalists and a wide array of sounds. Compared to Ferry’s previous three albums it stays true to Ferry’s sound and is consistent with his quality productions through the years yet reaches out to a broader audience. Select features may not be as diverse; particularly a few of the instrumentals however the vocal tracks offer stupendous quality. Among the best tracks are most definitely “Live Forever” featuring Aruna, and “In Your Eyes” featuring JES. Revealing a few of the tracks in advanced as singles decreased the factor of surprise to some extent but still left me excited to hear the full album upon completion. WKND is due for a release on February 24th, 2012.

REVIEW: Solarstone – Touchstone Remixed

Artist: Solarstone

Genre: Progressive House, Trance, D'n'B,

Label: Solaris Recordings

Release Date: January 23, 2012

Rating: 8.0 out of 10.0

Introduction:

Solarstone also known as Richard Mowatt, is a British composer, producer, and DJ. In earlier years Solarstone also included Sam Tierney (1994 – 1997), and Andy Bury (1994 – 2006). Since 1994 they produced Trance, Progressive, and Chillout, and to date “Last Summer Fields”, “Seven Cities”, and “Spectrum” are the most popular releases.

In 2010, Solarstone delivered a 12 track album released on Solaris Recordings titled Touchstone, in which styles such as Trance, Downtempo, and Ambient are incorporated. Not even two years later on January 23, 2012 Touchstone Remixed, a remix album is also released on Solaris Recordings. Tracklisting is in the same order as the previous non-remix album, but all tunes have different remixers spicing it up with styles such as Progressive House, Trance, D'n'B, and Progressive Trance.

Review:

The album begins with “Is There Anyone Out There (Dirty Herz Remix)” featuring Bill McGrudy, a progressive track with deep and breathy vocals. The track has a wonderful bassline, and once McGrudy begins singing, the chorus starts with “is anyone out there”, the track lightens up. This is definitely, a catchy tune for the hardcore dancefloor trancers.

Up next is a dreamy remix done by Tucandeo of “Ultraviolet” which is a mood setter for the following tunes. It starts off with a progressive bassline, eventually layering into a mellow, dream-like state accompanied with female vocals. Its uplifting buildup almost makes you feel like jumping between the different parts of the light spectrum.

Third song on the album is “Night Signals (Vadim Zhukov TFA Remix)” which is a quite interesting tune. The track begins with a bassline while adding on a weird sequence of sounds, perhaps the night signals. This track doesn't have too much layering and stays the same throughout the 9 minutes while adding on haunting vocals by Julie Scott. In my opinion, I don't find this too impressive and believe the original remix was definitely the better one.

The Elfsong remix of “Touchstone” after which the album is titled, is one of the best remixes on this album. A slow progression of progressive sounds with guitar-like noise kicks it off to a great start. Eventually transforming into colorful trance with relaxing riffs, and it's songs like these that make you drive down at night with windows down blasting it as loud as you can.

Ambient sounds with minimal beats describe “Electric Love (Piotro Microprog Love Mix),” a second track that features Bill McGrudy. A perfect relaxer, this chill track has an unreal combination of micro progressive bass, airiness, and echoed male vocals to add to its perfection.

Next, is “Intravenous (Konektiv's Epicentric Mix)” a track that somehow doesn't sit well with me. It’s filled with a beat that sounds strange almost represents the spoken word “wow”, but both do not appear to be synchronized together. It creates confusion for me, which makes the arrangement almost sound off beat.

The second half of the album begins with a more upbeat remix by Dave Horn of “Twisted Wing”. Once again, featuring Julie Scott, this is a more uplifting harmony than any of the previous ones. Slowly builds up to an enormously powerful and beautifully crafted trance tune.

Although the title says otherwise, “Slowmotion (Klauss Goulart Remix)” is definitely not lacking its speed. A beautiful cool off is encountered that has a mesmerizing melody in the middle of this club banger. It has been worked on by both Solarstone and the reputable Orkidea.

The single “The Best Way To Make Your Dreams Come True Is To Wake Up (Miss Nine Remix),” was released on the same date as the album; January 23rd, 2012 and is surely the longest song title on this album. Lyrically, it's very interesting singing about the future, dreams, aliens, and time, which make it seem a bit futuristic. Musically, I think this would be better as an instrumental.

Nearing the end of the album is “Zeitgeist” remixed by Dennis Shepard, another track revisited by Orkidea. “Zeitgeist” is another very upbeat beautiful track satisfying to the listener's ears. Constantly singing “fly with me,” not sure if it has something to do with flying back in time and remembering good times (“zeitgeist” means “the spirit of the times” in German).

Taking a turn into the Drum'n'Bass department with “The Last Defeat Pt II (Royal Sapien Remix)” definitely stands out. This is the only D'n'B track on this release, but is perfectly layered with a faster paced drum beat, while matching Lucia Holme's soothing vocals with it to create an exotic environment.

Last track on the album is “There's A Universe (Chris Johnson Remix)”. It begins very simply: a drum beat, occasional sound pattern layered up very slowly. To cool off, ambient sounds are intertwined with echoic male vocals that are overpowered by music. It makes it hard to understand the lyrics.

Touchstone Remixed offers various styles while keeping on the mellower, progressive side of EDM. Personally, it took me quite a few listens to get a feel of some of the tracks and let them sink in since I'm more of an upbeat type of a Trance fan however there are some really nice remixes, while some others are better in its original form. I look forward to Solarstones future releases and would like to see a new variety of collaborators and remixers joining him.

REVIEW: Armin van Buuren – ASOT 2011 Yearmix

Artist: Armin van Buuren

Genre: Trance

Label: Cloud 9 Holland

Release Date: December 27, 2011

Rating: 9.0 out of 10

Introduction:

Armin van Buuren, who got the #2 spot on the 2011's DJ Mag poll, is a world-wide known Dutch DJ who held the #1 spot four years in row previously. Last year was a big year for Armin, celebrating his 500th episode of his radio show A State of Trance. It was celebrated in his home country – The Netherlands, with more than 30 DJs from around the world, and the event itself had more than 30,000 attendees. In his personal life, 2011 was a big year as well, because his first child Fenna was born over the summer. Since 2003, Armin managed to release 4 albums, the most recent one being Mirage in 2010. Armin continues to surprise us with his unique sounds from album to album, as well his tune selection for every ASOT radio show. All the Armin fans have a lot to look forward to, as he will continue to supply us with great Trance tracks in the future.

Review:

There's no better way to start a 2011 Yearmix than by opening the set with EDM's sexy vocalist Nadia Ali. Her collaboration “Pressure (Alesso Remix)” with Alex Kenjsi is a great way to start off this 2 hour Trance journey. Followed by another great 2011 Trance track is the Myon & Shane 54 Summer of Love remix of “Promises” by Andain. This remix received great attention last year, and ended up in the official Red Bull commercial. Armin has incorporated his own collaboration track “Youtopia (Blake Jarrell Remix)” with Adam Young into this mix, which was released in 2010 on his newest album Mirage. As well as another track off of the same album titled “Drowning (Avicii Remix)” featuring Laura V. The composition of the track “Phoenix From The Flames (Omnia & The Blizzard Remix)” is unique along with Justine Suissa's soft and dreamy vocals on this collaboration with Boom Jinx. While listening to this track, a feeling out of this world takes over and satisfies the listener's ear. Justine's vocals are outstanding on this track, and are full of emotion. The famous trio Above & Beyond also make an appearance on this Yearmix with tunes such as “You Got To Go (Kyau & Albert Remix),” “Sun & Moon (Club Mix),” and “Thing Called Love (Above & Beyond Club Mix)” all featured on their newly released album Group Therapy. These guys will never let us down, and continue to successfully deliver catchy tunes, such as “Sun & Moon (Club Mix)” in which Richard Bedford sings his heart out about a girl he can't get over. Lyrically this song is making a statement about love and losing someone, and contrasting between feelings, like contrasting between the Sun and the Moon. Towards the end of October 2011, Cosmic Gate released their brand new album Wake Your Mind, and it seems like their track with Emma Hewitt “Be Your Sound” didn't slip through Armin's fingers either. The track starts off with low vocals making the listener feel a little bit of darkness, but as the song builds up, so does the track and eventually lightens up. A wonderful addition to this Yearmix is Hannah's “Falling Away (Armin van Buuren Remix),” and although Hannah sings only two words continuously, her unique vocals keep us listening. It's a beautiful dreamy track with a progressive side to it, which makes us Trance addicts fist pump to the catchy beat at any given moment. The first CD includes many great Trance DJs and vocalists such as Nadia Ali, Arty, Mat Zo, Above & Beyond, Markus Schulz, Cosmic Gate, W&W, Ferry Corsten, Super8 & Tab, Tritonal, ATB, and Armin himself.

The less vocal but more progressive hour of the Yearmix is the second hour. The second hour opens up with a collaboration between John O'Callaghan and the NYC native Betsie Larkin with “Save This Moment (Gareth Emery Remix),” it's a strong opener to begin the next hour as it sets the more progressive mood for the listener. “Sun Gone Down” is a co-written track by Aruna, Sir Adrian, and Raz Nitzan for Protoculture featuring Shannon Hurley, who is a fairly new addition to the Trance family. It's a track that anyone will love on the first listen, as it is a very catchy one! An incredibly powerful track is “Into The Light (Alex Morph Remix)” by Gareth Emery featuring Mark Frisch, which continues to set the progressive mood for the listener. This incredible track has been released on Gareth's 2010 album Northern Lights along with 9 other great tracks. Yet again, Armin adds on 4 more of his tracks including a remix of his already known track “Blue Fear” from his 2003 album 76. It lets the listener to revisit and remember his first debut album from almost 10 years ago and compare it with Armin's latest work. There is a great deal of maturity between his 4 albums as well as the maturity of Trance music between now and 10 years ago. Orjan Nilsen modernizes this great Armin track, adding more power, bass, drums, and even more need to fist pump. An angelic tune with vocals from above can be described as “An Angel's Love (Vocal Mix)” by Alex M.O.R.P.H. featuring Sylvia Tosun. This angelic tune gives anyone a rush while listening and tingles your heart with this warm fresh sound. Adding a twist to the mix with “Painting Pyramids” by Bjorn Akesson, which has an extraordinary beginning that puts the listener into a completely different world, followed by the drum beat to fire up any party. To close off the two wonderful hours of powerful Trance, Armin joins forces with another wonderful DJ – Ferry Corsten. Together they brewed up a monster track “Brute” that brings out the clubber in anyone. This song has received its moments of fame on a Dutch station SLAM! FM.

The double album offers two full hours of nothing but great Trance music. CD1 shows more of a vocal Trance selection while CD2 offers the progressive side of Trance with less vocals. It is very well mixed with great transitions, only using few minutes from each song, rather than the full songs to intensify the Trance rush. The best track on CD1 is “Phoenix From The Flames (Omnia & The Blizzard Remix)” a collaboration between Boom Jinx and Justine Suissa. It's a soft, catchy track and Justine's vocals complete it. And the best track from CD2 is “Sun Gone Down” by Protoculture featuring Shannon Hurley. It is a personal favorite of mine, and the tune is co-written by another great vocalist Aruna herself. Protoculture is actually a PsyTrance DJ who recently began producing in the Trance genre, and I think that it is a great transition between the two sounds.

Just sit back, relax, enjoy, and listen to get the best of both worlds. Once again, Armin has done it! He closed off a great year with wonderful tracks to please all of our ears and immerse ourselves in great Trance music to remember 2011, and start off the New Year with a positive attitude.

REVIEW: 20 Years of Ferry Corsten App

Artist: Ferry Corsten

Platform: iTunes & iPad

Release Date: In Stores Now!

Rating: 5 out of 5

Ferry Corstens 20 Years app is not a bad deal at all for just $2.99. It shows what he has accomplished throughout his 20 years off DJing and producing. The app is pretty awesome and very easy to navigate. The mix he compiled for this app was a nice mix and he also mixed some of most memorable classic tracks which had me wishing I was 10 years younger again along with his new tracks. The best part is that you can buy the tracks that he mixed using the app straight to your iTunes. I rate this app a 5 out of 5 stars simply because Ferry stays true to himself and his fans around the world keeping the trance alive for 20 years and we hope he is around for 20 more years to come.

"Time flies when you’re having fun. I can’t believe I have been producing music for 20 years already and I can’t wait for the next 20. I hope you enjoy my App as much as I have done creating it. I would like to thank everybody for all the support. Without you I would not be where I am today!"

REVIEW: The Digital Blonde - Seranade

Artist: The Digital Blonde

Genre: Trance

Label: Joof Recordings

Release Date: October 25th, 2011

Rating: 8.0 out of 10

Introduction:

It seems an age has gone by since we had The Digital Blondes previous album Synthology way back in 2006! In the meantime we have been treated to his outstanding Blonde in Boots EP along with two double albums under his 00.db band project with John 00 Fleming. But now the time has come for the Digital Blonde to flex his muscles and show the world why he has been loved since 1996 and his birth of the classic Anthium.

Review:

The Digital Blonde also known as Ricky Smith sure knows how to get right down to business. From the very first track, which seems as if it’s meant to be an intro as its named “Introx” but it’s so much more than that. The album begins and I immediately hear so many rich and unique layered sounds. By time the track fully drops I’ve lost count of how many sounds are going on simultaneously and with such harmonious precision.

“Lanieka” is a softer toned track with many suppressed sounds in the background along with some bubbly bursts of melody in the foreground and it is extremely progressive the entire way through to the end with some blast effects and the occasional growl here and there and some vague whispers.

Some spacey sounds come in and an unknown samples of a male speaking, which sound like they are something right out of the Twilight Zone. He says “It’s been 20 minutes since you hit the mushroom, how do you feel?” as another male replies the effects on the vocal are very shaky and echoed at some points and broken up slightly in others. “Close your eyes and tell me what you see?” and the dark beat kicks in for the track “6 Weeks and 1 Million Years”. Once the main melody begins it is so simple yet eloquent with very slight variations throughout the track as the pads come in heavier and heavier and the sample is re-looped yet again towards the conclusion and the snappy hi hats take the track to its end.

“Starscreem” is the fourth progressive trance track before the album is kicked into straight up trance mode and is likely the most epic thus far with a nice bass line, smooth progression, and whirling wave synths accompanied by zapping effects.

“Amaphis” is a much harder and darker sounding track with harsh leads and light digitized sounds, pounding percussion; overall this is one hell of a stomper but doesn’t have as much flow as the previous tracks. The arrangement seems just a bit random.

The album takes a turn towards the Breaks now. Just as I think to myself the track “Hydo” is not really unlike any other breaks I’ve heard before it really starts to pick it up just after the four minute mark and becomes more complex and atmospheric.

“Jinga” becomes swiftly intoxicating with its abrupt sweeping, determined percussion, distant howling, and electrified groove, featuring some synths that sound so finely tuned they almost sound like they are singing. This is a powerful track indeed.

The nature inspired “Rainsong” is titled very accurately based on the sound. You can hear thunder in the background along with what sounds like a Native American rain chant.

“Sanctum” contains samples of Terence McKenna: The World & It's Double. I’ll bet it sounds like I read the book or listened to the book on table but I didn’t I just googled the lyrics to find out where they came from. I wasn’t as fortunate with locating the words for the last sample for the track “6 Weeks and 1 Million Years”. Now that I have been made aware of this book I am very interested in pursuing this it some more but for now onward with my review of “Seranade”.

“Blaze” has the most interesting combination of sounds and is definitely hard hitting psy-trance at its finest along with some more unidentified excerpts of what could possibly be a movie. The kind that just makes you want to open up your head and rip your brain right out of your skull out of sheer excitement.

It’s going to be hard to top that last track but if any track can do it, it would be the track the album was named after “Seranade” although not quite because I must admit the sound overall seems a bit dated and repetitive.

For the grand finale we have “Senabite” which is surprisingly a drum and bass track and is a rather unexpected genre for The Digital Blonde to produce. While I am not a Dn’B fan I am sure this is a track that fans of that genre can appreciate.

The Digital Blonde certainly didn’t take any shortcuts with this album. I am most impressed that all twelve of the tracks featured are his solo productions and there are no collaborations.

Tracklist:
1.Introx
2. Laneika
3. 6 weeks and 1 million years
4. Starscreem
5. Amaphis
6. Hydro
7. Jinga
8. Rainsong
9. Sanctum
10. Blaze
11. Seranade
12. Senabite

REVIEW: Cosmic Gate – Wake Your Mind

Artist: Cosmic Gate

Genre: Trance

Label: Black Hole Recordings

Release Date: October 31st, 2011

Rating: 7.0 out of 10

Cosmic Gate recently announced the release of their brand new artist album entitled “Wake Your Mind”. The release will be accompanied by a tour across the United States and Canada that will span through the rest of the year and possibly the beginning of next year as well. Nic and Bossi will be travelling to a significant number of venues and among them will be Cielo in New York, Marquee in Las Vegas, Voyeur in San Diego and plenty more.

Wake Your Mind is a completely different from their last release “Back 2 The Future”. The new artist album contains fourteen brand spanking new tracks, some of which have already been released this year as singles where as “Back 2 The Future” was a re-release of several revised and remixed versions of some of their classics.

The track begins with a track named “Sometimes They Come Back For More” with Canadian based producer Arnej and its pretty clear that Arnej influenced the track name quite a bit. The title is a bit of play on words evidently with some of Arnej’s recent track titles being “The Ones That Get Away”, “They Need Us”, “We Need Them”, and “They Always Come Back”. May be one day we will finally find out who “they” really are. The track is has a very classic feel to it, particularly the build up and the pads and then once the track drops full force it gets quite techy.

“Be Your Sound” is the second track on the album and it is a vocal selection featuring Australian based vocalist Emma Hewitt who has worked with Cosmic Gate in the past on the track “Not Enough Time”. The track begins very melodic easy going and progresses into a dance floor ready groove.

“Wake Your Mind” is the track the album is named after and it is a male vocal track with the Cary Brothers and has a laid back sound that is versatile for listening at home or at the club. “The Theme” is next up and it has a very distinct whiney lead synth, and at the very instant that the sound comes in it’s pretty much unmistakable and you immediately know which track is playing. This track gets my vote for having one of the longest drum roll drops ever!

Track number five is another vocal trancer featuring Aruna and it is collaboration between Cosmic Gate and Myon & Shane 54 entitled “All Around You” Aruna is a great vocalist and she really adds so much class to the track along with the melodic tones of the beat. “Never Apart” is yet another vocal track this time with a fairly new vocalist to the scene Alana Aldea. Her vocals were featured on the track “Sweetest Lie” with Leon Bolier on Streamlined Recordings in 2010 and then the track was released as a single earlier this year. The way she carries her voice is very unique and it’s clear to see why Cosmic Gate chose her for this track.

“Over The Rainbow” with South African Soul singer J’Something seems like it would have the most crossover and commercial appeal of all the tracks on the album. I could definitely see this being played on a local radio station.

After this my favorite track on the entire album comes in and that would be “Nothing Ever Lasts” with Andrew Bayer. Of all the tracks on the album this one has the most unique sound, a smooth progression, and is rich with creativity. It’s nice to see Cosmic Gate breaking away from their usual style on this track, it keeps things interesting. It would be cool if Andrew was joining Cosmic Gate on a few of their performances on the tour and I would definitely like to check out a set from Andrew as I’ve never seen him play live before. The vocals of Emma Hewitt return again for the track “Calm Down”, she is featured on the album twice and of the two tracks she is featured on I definitely like this one best. It has a very nice bouncy energy.

Next up is Barra, and I think that everyone has heard this track by now. If you haven’t then you have likely been living under a rock, or just haven’t attended any of Cosmic Gate’s shows. It has been a signature staple in most of their sets for quite a while now. It is definitely a crowd pleaser and it excited the dance floor whenever they play it. “Drifting Away” with Cathy Burton is a track that holds very true to Cosmic Gate’s sound.

I was very pleased to hear that JES would be featured on the album although it’s not surprising since they are both on Black Hole Recordings. I’ve been a fan of her work for quite some time and I immensely enjoyed her last album. JES’ vocals are certainly an asset to any track or album.

The second to last track on the album is one of Cosmic Gates solo productions. It reminds me of Barra as well as some of their other previous tracks combined into one. This track really screams Cosmic Gate! The closing track “Beautiful Destruction” takes things into a slightly different direction. It features the vocals of Alana Aldea again but this time with a slow tempoed growly bassline and smooth atmosphere.

The album is slated for official release on October 31st, 2011 on Black Hole Recordings. What a nice Halloween treat!

Track list:
01. Sometimes They Come Back For More (with Arnej)
02. Be Your Sound (with Emma Hewitt)

REVIEW: John ‘00’ Fleming -  Nine Lives

Artist: John ‘00’ Fleming

Genre: Trance

Label: JOOF Recordings

Release Date: September 30th, 2011

Rating: 7.0 out of 10

Introduction:

John 00 Fleming admits he is a DJ first, hence why it has taken him this long to present his debut solo artist album. Touring the Worlds clubs and festivals, Gold disc selling mix compilations, award winning Essential mixes, producing TV and Movie scores has sucked away precious studio time.

Being one of the few producers that actually produces his own music these days, Fleming has spent every single precious moment of his time working on each track to make it exactly how he visions it in his head, this is what makes all of his productions so successful and unique. Quality over quantity as the saying goes.

Nine Lives represents a new turning point for him, Fleming being a dedicated supporter of the more specialist scene. John is going back to his roots, making music solely aimed for the dance floor with no care for the commercial mainstream. Music with soul. Music with passion. Music to represent the artist within. We think this album truly represents John 00 Fleming and his love for the more specialist music scene.

Eventually an album with depth, releasing a musical story. This is one of those rare listening albums from start to finish. Yet most tracks will be heard on the dance floor, this proves the true artist within, a rare skill and breed in todays electronic world, as all the tracks are professionally written for himself, and not mainstream success. Thats where the big difference lies.

This is your chance to experience the true artist behind the name, John 00 Fleming.

Review:

If you are looking for the best in Psy-Trance, then search no further because John 00 Fleming will take good care of you. This time not only does he release a fantastic selection of Psy-Trance tunes but he also delivers some Progressive House, Techno, and even a dash of Breaks all with a psychedelic influence as only he knows how.

The album “Nine Lives” is encompassed by sixteen tracks and it is slated for official release on September 30th, 2011 on Camouflage which is a sub-label of Subtraxx Recordings. It opens of with a groovy undertone with The Winds Of Change Are Blowing and really starts picking up by the third track entitled “MMX1215” enhanced further by and intoxicating orchestral melody and ethereal chanting.

Dense Clouds features some international female vocals and the beats are pretty unique leading into the lighthearted melody of A Far Off Place featuring Joanna Swann. Joanna has a very unusual voice and singing style. This might sound crazy, but I swear at certain parts of this track it almost sounds like they sampled a couple of sounds from the Sonic the Hedgehog video game.

Baphomets Horn brings back the sound I expect from John, a great dark progression with a few eerie sounding effects that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up if you listen closely. I almost wish the entire album was based on this sound but then it would not have the great balance and versatility that it does. Finding Ganesha is track number seven and I am almost at the halfway point of listening to the album and I was very delighted to hear some full on banging psy-trance. It is definitely another favorite. From here on out the energy just does not let up.

Bumble Lights cranks the speed up at a much higher BPM and at this point I am hoping there aren’t too many more vocal tracks since I much prefer to listen to instrumentals. I was pleased to hear that New Beginning did not contain vocals making it my third favorite of the album thus far. 1440 Minutes has a bunch of suppressed sounds in the background which I am sure you need a finely tuned ear to hear, definitely a nice touch.

Translucent is a male vocal track with a more mainstream sound featuring the vocals of Intervurt followed by Never Forgetten which is a feel good melodic trancer. Only two tracks left to go at this point and they were so worth waiting for. Psy-trance at its best, the album closes out with Frisson and Sym*bol*ism versus E-Clip.

Tracklist:

 1. The Winds Of Change Are Blowing
 2. United 93
 3. MMX1215
 4. Dense Clouds
 5. A Far Off Place
 6. Baphomets Horn
 7. Finding Ganesha

 10. Bumble Lights
 11. New Beginning

REVIEW: Christopher Lawrence & Sean J. Morris - Rock It

Artist: Christopher Lawrence & Sean J. Morris + Reaky Remix

Genre: PsyTrance

Label: Pharmacy Music

Rating: 8.5 out of 10

Introduction:

Get ready to 'Rock It’. That's just what the new track by Christopher Lawrence and Sean J. Morris does to the dance floor!

This track is made for peak time dance floor mayhem. Road tested around the world and back again, 'Rock It' never fails to deliver. But that's what you would expect from the collaboration between legendary DJ Christopher Lawrence and Sean J. Morris, a classically trained producer who has turned his immense talent to trance!

'Rock It' is a powerful track built on a rolling bass line with an infectious groove. Spiraling acid lines and fist pumping melodies made to raise the roof make this track an instant winner.

Completing this package is a tech trance monster from super producer, Reaky. The always inventive and ultra cool sound that Reaky is famous for turns 'Rock It' into a track which will fit perfectly in any DJs set. A thundering bass line and driving techno-influenced percussion rework this track into a hypnotic dance floor beast!

Review:

Electronic Night Life is proud to feature the twelfth release on the Pharmacy label by none other than Christopher Lawrence in a collaborative effort with Sean J. Morris. The single was released June 20th, 2011 on Pharmacy Music with a special remix on the B-side from Slovenian producer Reaky.

The track "Rock It" is laced with soaring melodies, an old school trance feel, and a slight dark edge. When combined these elements will take you on a musical high and that is just what the Pharmacy ordered.

The Reaky mix contains massive build ups, pulsating rhythms, and an intense flow that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The track continuously surprises you with layers of additional effects with a constant chord progression.

Both mixes are splendid. I also enjoyed hearing the track in Christopher’s Beyond Wonderland set and it fit in quite well. Christopher Lawrence always put out quality releases.

If you like what you hear then you can purchase the track at Beatport.

REVIEW: JES – Unleash The Beat

Artist: JES

Album: Unleash The Beat

Genre: Rocktronica

Label: Magik Muzik

Release Date: June 20th, 2011

Rating: 9.5 out of 10

The lovely and talented JES returns with her latest album “Unleash The Beat” which will be released June 20th, 2011 on the Black Hole Recordings sub-label Magik Muzik, and this time she has really outdone herself. My prediction is that this album is a surefire chart-topper, and is quite possibly her best release to date.

JES has an incredible sultry voice and an extremely unique style. She is also one of the best, if not THE best electronic music lyricists out there. She constantly charters into previously unexplored territories so to speak, and that is how she keeps her work interesting. Most singers rehash the same themes over and over, rhyming the same stale words in a predictable fashion. JES puts a brilliant twist into her music. Listen closely to the words of any of her songs you will see her deep thought process behind them. Her lyrics are creative, clever, and most importantly original. Collectively they are like a life lesson based on her first hand experiences that she is sharing with the world.

“Unleash The Beat” has a plethora of amazing tracks and superb remixes. The album begins with “Taxigirl - High Glow (JES Vocal Redux Edit)” which has an infectious bass line and the arrangement is just so smooth. The vocals and effects really harmonize well with the beat and carry the track along.
What happens when you put two musical geniuses in the same room? The answer: “The Light In Things” which is the second track on the album featuring JES along with BT. The third track “Imagination” remixed by Kaskade is so groovy. I loved the original but I think to myself “I may have a newfound love for this remix as well” realizing I’m slowly turning up the volume as the album progresses.

The album also features collaborations with BT, Tiësto, Richard Durand, Allure, Ronski Speed, and Andy Duguid. The remixers included are also top notch from the likes of Kaskade, Cosmic Gate, Gabriel & Dresden, Thomas Gold, TwisteDDiskO, Dave Silcox, and Coco Channel and are infused with every genre of music humanly possible on one disc.

I was previously unaware of TwisteDDiskO until his remix of “Closer” caught my attention. It was a part of the remix package for the single shortly after “High Glow” (JES’ last album) was released. I am really glad she continued to work with him for this album on the track “Show Me The Way” because his style is dynamic.

The eighth track reminds us that JES is representing New York City on her track with Richard Durand entitled N.Y.C. and we can all unanimously agree that we are proud to have her! When “Fascination” comes in, it just hit me in the face like a ton of bricks! Could it be? Rocktronica beats with a little dash of Dubstep. While not an avid fan of Dubstep I appreciate a good track no matter what the genre, and this was definitely something I could dance to. I rejoiced as I heard that a new remix of “Deep Breath Love” was included on the album. This was always one of my favorites by JES. I have always held the lyrics to that track very dear to my heart.

JES did indeed make my imagination run away with me on this one. My overall opinion is that the album is extremely inspiring, and JES is a force to be reckoned with. This is the type of album where you can’t really fathom clicking the fast forward or skip button. It is really enjoyable to listen to from start to finish.

Tracklist:

01. Taxigirl - High Glow (JES Vocal Redux Edit)
02. BT featuring JES - The Light In Things
03. JES - Imagination (Kaskade Club Remix)
04. Tiësto featuring JES - Everything (Cosmic Gate Remix)
05. JES - Around You (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)
06. JES - Awaken (Thomas Gold Remix)
07. Allure featuring JES - Show Me The Way (TwisteDDisko Remix)
08. Richard Durand & JES - N.Y.C.
09. JES & Ronski Speed - Can't Stop (Taxigirl Edit)
10. JES & Andy Duguid - Before You Go (Taxigirl Edit)

REVIEW: Dirty Vegas – Electric Love

Artist: Dirty Vegas

Album: Electric Love

Genre: House

Label: Om Records

Release Date: April 25th, 2011

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Steve Smith, Paul Harris, and Ben Harris otherwise known as the trio Dirty Vegas released their latest album “Electric Love” on Om Records April 25th, 2011. The band first got together in 2001 and released the single “Days Go By” (which I actually did not become familiar with till about a year) later followed by theire debut album “Dirty Vegas” in 2002. In 2004 they released the follow up to “Dirty Vegas” with the album entitled “One”, and sadly a year later the trio broke up and left many fans heartbroken.

The band reformed in 2008 and began working on some original productions and resumed performing together live in 2009. The album includes ten original productions that they began producing in 2008 through the current year varying from House, to Rock influenced dance, to Break beats. The album features topics like Breakups to make-ups and everything in between which makes it easy to identify with.

The opening track is entitled “Little White Doves”, at first distinguishing why the hook includes doves is unclear. The last track with a dove then I can think of is Prince’s “When Doves Cry”. Presumably because doves signify peace they are therefore saying, “we come in peace.” The style of the track reminds me a bit of The Killers. The track “Changes” has a nice fat guitar riff which adds to the oomph factor.

“Electric Love” this is the track the album is named after. It’s a bit houseier with a slight disco vibe. “Emma” is a melodic track with a feel good groove, which also has an 80’s tempo. I would describe it as the “Jenny 8675309” of 2011. “Pressure” comes in with a dreamy pad with nice echoed vocal effects and when the beat drops its unbelievably bouncy and exhilarating. What makes this track so impressive are the suppressed effects that require a trained ear to truly appreciate. This was the first track that Dirty Vegas recorded upon reuniting. Out of all the tracks on the album this is definitely the one that’s dance floor oriented with “Round and Round” coming in as a very close second. “Today” is a bit more somber in comparison to the rest of the tracks but every album has to have one of those doesn’t it?

Weekend has one of those unavoidably catchy lead synths and pleasant vocal effects with a dash of piano. It grabs your attention almost instantly. The topic is something most can relate to, party time on the weekends! My personal favorites on the album were “Pressure”, “Never Enough” “Weekend” and “21st Century”. What can I say? I’m a sucker for break beats and “21st Century” is arranged quite well.

My only gripe is that the songs are a bit short; however, the plus side is they don’t contain the usual minute or two of filler beats at the beginning and the end which makes them slightly harder to mix but for better for listening purposes since it keeps you interested. Hat’s off to you Dirty Vegas for delivering a well constructed selection of eclectic tunes.

Track List:

01. Little White Doves
02. Changes
03. Electric Love
04. Emma
05. Pressure
06. Round And Round
07. Today
08. Never Enough
09. Weekend
10. 21st Century

REVIEW: George Acosta - Visions Behind Expressions

Artist: George Acosta

Album: Visions Behind Expressions

Genre: Trance

Label: Black Hole Recordings

Release Date: April 4th, 2011

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

On April 4th, 2011 George Acosta’s artist album appropriately entitled “Visions Behind Expressions” will be released on Black Hole Recordings This 14-track release features original productions and collaborations with talented vocalists including Fisher, Emma Lock, Terry Bennett, and Jerique.

The deep soulful vocals of Kathleen Fisher coupled by a chilled and relaxing instrumental on the track “The Way She Loves” and immediately exude calming emotions. Knowing George’s style quite well I knew that this was more of an intro and that the tone would not be kept at this level for long and as I continued through the release my assumptions were confirmed.

Next up was another vocal track featuring Fisher but “Love Rain Down” was much more upbeat and melodic encompassed by all of the elements that create a feel good trancer. Nothing You’ve Ever Seen is more if a commercial house styled pop track with catchy lyrics which switches the overall direction of the way the album has been flowing thus far before yet another track featuring Fisher comes into play. Break Me Down is slightly darker in terms of sound than the previous tracks that featured her vocals with softer whispers just until the chorus comes in and her haunting voice shines through the progressive build up.

For a change of pace Something About you features male vocals. Terry Bennett sings of his admiration of a special someone along with the beats of an easy going yet danceable beat which breaks down into a captivating melodic piano before building back up to a nice bouncy bass line.

At this point everyone should be familiar with the next track entitled “Beautiful” featuring Fisher as it has received much radio airplay and received support by countless DJ’s however this album mix of the track is slightly different than the one I am used to hearing.

Never Fear has a much rougher and tougher beat packed full of hard kicks and sharp snaps featuring the vocals of Emma Lock. Opposites attract so her smooth and angelic vocals accompanying the beat provide a nice contrast. Falling Deep is extremely uplifting with uniquely arranged synths, atmospheric pads, and a nice break beat midway through the track before applying a much heavier lead synth. George also included a much more upbeat version of “The Way She Loves” and ends with vocal house track “Round The Clock” featuring the vocals of Jerique.

The album is extremely vocal and includes influences of Trance, Progressive Trance, Ambient, and Progressive House overall. My favorite tracks on the album were Crystaline and Things Are Not the Way They Used To Be vs. Gerry Cueto as I typically prefer instrumentals.

I enjoyed the release however on future releases I would like to see George utilize a larger variety of vocalists as well as include more instrumental releases. I really appreciate Fishers work but I felt that Fishers vocals were featured on too many of the tracks.

REVIEW: deadmau5 - 4x4=12

Artist: deadmau5

Album: 4x4=12

Genre: House

Label: Ultra Records

Release Date: December 6th, 2010

Rating: 7 out of 10

Introduction:

Anyone that attended a deadmau5 show in North America this year would have experienced electrifying live renderings of material from his first full length artist album 4x4=12, due out December 6 on Ultra Music.  Performing in front of hundreds of thousands at major festivals and venues from coast to coast including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Electric Daisy Carnival, Austin City Limits and Treasure Island to name a few, electronic music’s most talked-about artist and producer unveiled a wide range of new songs to accompany his roof-raising visual show.

With his revolutionary LED mau5head which flashed space scenes and robot smiley faces, deadmau5--at his full production shows and extended sets at his “unhooked” gigs--highlighted his sets with tracks like “Cthulhu Sleeps,” “Some Chords” and the atmospheric track “Raise Your Weapon” featuring Picture Book singer Greta Svabo Bech.

Also included on 4x4=12 is the deadmau5 vs. Wolfgang Gartner collaboration “Animal Rights,” which Beatport described as “…a huge club record that combines the styles of both producers and has been heavily compared to Daft Punk.

Review:

4x4=12 opens up on a strong note with Some Chords which is really far from just any old chords thrown together as nonchalant as the title seems. The track is definitely my favorite on this release.

Sofi Needs a Ladder would be a great track if an instrumental version were available. I’m not a big fan of the lyrics or the vocals. A City in Florida contains all the signature makings of a deadmau5 track however in comparison to some of his more complex productions it’s decent.

Bad Selection turns out to be a good selection if you are into grooves, techiness, with a dash of electro. The track is definitely placed well within the album, as it is a great fit to introduce the next track Animal Rights with Wolfgang Gartner, which is my second favorite on the album. Animal Rights is pure electro madness compiled in an extremely unique way with an undeniable booty shaking beat. My only complaint about the track is the fade out is unnecessarily long which isn’t a big deal.

The Michael Woods Remix of I Said is very minimal. The melodies and progression of Cthulhu Sleeps reminds me of Some Chords just with some alternate sound effects layered over it. The symphonic organ melodies and the hauntingly dark vibe of Right This Second is very impressive with intense layering of pads and other atmospheric elements eventually drawing you to a progressive build up only to reloop the opening melody and combine them all together in the end.

Raise Your Weapon is a vocal selection with progressive house beats leading into and uplifting trance rise and then just dropping out into Dubstep unexpectedly while still holding true to the deadmau5 style. One Trick Pony follows the track, which could easily be the extension to Raise Your Weapon to form one massive superdubtrack.

The album ends with Everything Before. It was my first time hearing the track and I was pleasantly surprised by the danceable flow and construction of the track making it my third favorite on the album.

Overall the tracks touch so many genres and incorporate many key elements from Electro, House, Techno, Dubstep, and Trance. It was very well balanced at satisfying nearly any type of Electronic Music listener. The album is out now on Ultra Records.

Tracklist:

1. Some Chords
2. Sofi Needs a Ladder
3. City In Florida
4. Bad Selection
5. Animal Rights
6. I Said (Michael Woods Remix)
7. Cthulhu Sleeps
8.  Right This Second
9.  Raise Your Weapon
10. One Trick Pony
11. Everything Before

REVIEW: Underground Anthems 3 Mixed By Bissen Review

Artist: Bissen (Various Artist)

Album: Underground Anthems 3

Genre: Trance

Label: Recoverworld

Release: Date: October 18th, 2010

Rating: 8 out of 10

Introduction:

The highly Underground Anthems series reaches number 3 and this time the man at the helm is one of New York’s promising producers. Previously these albums have been mixed by Thomas Datt and Manuel le Saux and with both of these getting a massive response including MixMag Trance Compilation of the Month for Manuel’s album. With these credentials this was always going to be a tough act to follow but Bissen steps up to the mark superbly by stepping a little outside the realms of pure trance that have been the trademark of the previous two. This should be no surprise when you look at Bissen’s genre busting productions styles that have ranged from full on Trance for the likes of Discover, Armada and Eve through to his electro and techno influenced tech house styles on labels such as Boxer Recordings.

Bissen seamlessly merges these production skills into this DJ mix, which takes the old fashioned approach to a mix CD and brings it bang up to date. This is a musical journey crafted with exceptional skill that will have you poring over the DJ listings waiting for Bissen’s next appearance. DJing as it should be working through the gears until the journey reaches its euphoric conclusion. This is Bissen, this is Underground Anthems 3.

Review:

Bissen returns on October 18th, 2010 with his latest Trance compilation which is entitled Underground Anthems Volume 3.The compilation begins with a nice piano medley supported by some melodic chords, but isn’t ambient in the least. The very first track builds a nice energetic beat immediately bringing in the trancey vibe that continues throughout the rest of the release filled with swinging grooves and catchy bass lines. The tracks included are immersed with captivating breakdowns. The selection of songs and the arrangement are both on point. The mixing is executed very well with much taste and tact.

There were a few vocal tracks included which I’m usually not very fond of, but I didn’t mind in this case. Bissen manages to keep the listener interested with each track that he presents and he seems to follow up every track with an even more epically euphoric track than the last, thus creating a superb progression.

About midway through the mix he increases the BPM’s bringing up the energy significantly and additionally throwing in a dash of techiness for good measure. If this mix does not make you want to dance, then you need to get your ears checked. I enjoyed listening from start to finish with the exception of the track Ben Gold feat. Senadee - Today (Ferry Tayle Neverending Story Remix) which I personally feel sounded a bit generic but it mixed seamlessly into the next track, which is why I believe he chose the placement.

I recommend that all promoters in his hometown step up to the plate and book him more frequently because he really knows how to put down a killer set.

Tracklist:

01. David Newsum - Narco (Bissen Remix)
02. Aurum - The Code (Original Mix)
03. Bissen feat. Victoria Gross - Give It Away (Vintage Mix)
04. Sensorica - Masta of Sound (Bissen Refix)

REVIEW: CYGNUS X-1 - THE NEXT LOGICAL STEP

Artist: Cygnus X-1

Album: The Next Logical Step

Genre: Trance

Release Date: August 23rd, 2010

Rating: 7 out of 10

Introduction

Immerse yourself in that beloved state with eyes closed and outstretched arms - 'The Next Logical Step' has arrived riding a massive wave of euphoric, uplifting, banging Trance music. Cygnus X-1 is at the cutting edge and wired to the core in the current and future World of Trance energy. Packed with massive tunes that need no introduction, The Next Logical Step will deliver - pure elation.

Cygnus X-1 is the brain child of one Martin Craig from London who works as a van driver by day, morphs into a futuristic trance genius by night, a West Ham fan and a converted Buddhist (You just can't make that up). He's been around the block with various rock bands over the years and only started writing trance music in 2008. It was a visit to the Brixton academy to see Kraftwerk some years ago that planted the seed. Debut album 'D.N.A. (released in 2009) showed signs of things to come so keeping the faith with almost 2 years worth of material since has definitely been worth it.

Review:

Cygnus X-1, not to be confused with Cygnus X who created the track The Orange Theme back in '95 is a fresh new face in the Trance scene whom I knew very little about until receiving his album in the mail. I was delightfully surprised by the quality of music on his debut album "The Next Logical Step" and I was astounded at why this artist was so underrated and immediately decided I would give him the positive exposure he deserves.

Cygnus X-1 produced a sound that is very versatile included elements of Trance, Psy-Trance as well as a dash of Progressive House. The album even includes a track with female hip-hop lyricist from New York named MC Jah Jah entitled Turn In Your Weapons. Hip-hop/Dance Music fusion is not my cup of tea so I won't comment on that, but moving on the rest of the tracks were quite enjoyable. The track Logical Steps, Welcome To My World, Forever, and Lemon Drop have an infectious groove while X-Ray Soup, and Analyze have a trancy dance floor vibe. The single that is named after the artist sounds very old school and true to the back in the day Trance sound. Mumbai Kiss V.2.0 is extremely original and gives off an exotic vibe.  The album ends with Once Upon a Time leaving the listener on a melodic note.

Tracklist:

REVIEW: SLRS046 Forerunners - Futura EP

Artist: Forerunners

Album: Futura EP

Genre: Trance

Release Date: July 27th, 2010

Rating: 8 out of 10

Solarstone's Solaris Records has an upcoming release in the works due to hit the shelves on July 27th. Catalog # SLRS046 is a monster of an EP.

The Forerunners were once a duo consisting of Brenden LaBonte and Simon Duncan until the group parted ways in 2007 for reasons which remain unknown. Since then Brenden has taken the lead all on his own and is doing a stupendous job. The Futura EP is solid proof of this statement.

The Reloaded mix of Futura comes in on an extremely subtle tone and prepares to knock it's way into your mind leaving a lasting impression in your memory. The melodic sounds are simply captivating and the lead is pure genuis, and layers well surrounded by the atmospheric elements. It carries a positive energy through out the track up until the very last note.

The B side of the EP featuring the track Ronin is equally as stunning, yet slightly more upbeat and danceable due to the driving melody. The breakdown is very unique and beautiful. The main sound from the breakdown continues through the remainder of the track as an additional layer.

Here's to Solaris records for another job well done on releasing a quality tune.
